Black History Month
Activities
“Towards a discrimination-free society.”
Black History Month 2010 is an opportunity for St Maarten to recognize the past
and present
contributions that African slaves and their descendants have made and still make
to life in
St Maarten and in the Kingdom of the Netherlands in such areas as education,
medicine,
art, culture, public service, economic development, politics and human rights.
Human
Right activists Oldine Bryson-Pantophlet and Drs Raymond Jessurun in
collaboration with
various persons and organizations and the Philipsburg Jubilee Library have
developed a variety
of activities for children, youth, and adults for Black History Month 2010.
Central theme:
“The struggle for equality and non-discrimination in Black History in the
Caribbean”
The UN High Commissioner for Human
Rights Navi Pillay encouraged us last year to celebrate
Human Rights Day by advocating non-discrimination, organizing activities,
raising awareness
and reaching out to our local communities on December 10, and throughout 2010 :
“Our main
objective is to help promote discrimination-free societies and a world of equal
treatment for all.” (…)
The realization of all human rights - social, economic and cultural rights as
well as civil and political rights –
is hampered by discrimination. All too often, when faced with prejudice and
discrimination, political
leaders, governments and ordinary citizens are silent or complacent. Yet every
one of us can make a difference.”
The objectives of the organizers are
to raise awareness of human dignity and human rights (such as
civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights), knowledge and
understanding of the history of
afro-American and afro-Caribbean persons in the Americas and in the Caribbean,
discrimination
and the struggle for emancipation, the struggle for equal human rights and
freedoms and the
achievements, the significance of the legacy of Martin Luther King for the
world, etc. Questions
to reflect upon will be: How far we reached in St Maarten and in the Kingdom of
the Netherlands?
How far we have achieved human dignity and human rights (civil, political,
social, economic and
cultural rights) for all in SXM and in the Kingdom of the Netherlands? Do we
have achieved
non-discrimination and emancipation for all? Have we realized the legacy of Dr
Martin Luther King Jr in SXM?
EXHIBITION ON THE LEGACY OF DR.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr. had a
dream for the people of the United States of America and for
the people in the world. He was not only a dreamer, but he was also a man of
action. He even got a
Nobel Prize for Peace for the impact he has made in the world. What was the
dream of
Martin Luther King Jr.? What actions did he take to see his dream come through?
As of Monday January 18, 2010 you can visit the library for an Exhibition on the
Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
EXHIBITION OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF
AFRICAN SLAVES AND
DESCENDANTS TO SOCIETY
The library exhibition of the legacy
of Dr Martin Luther King Jr will be expanded into an

event. Our theme is
