Black History Month 2010
Black History Month is an
opportunity for St Maarten to recognize the past and present contributions
that Afro-Caribbean have made and make to the life in St Maarten and in the
Kingdom of the
Netherlands in such areas as education, medicine, art, culture, public service,
economic development,
politics and human rights. Human Right defenders Oldine Bryson and Drs Raymond
Jessurun in collaboration
with different persons and organizations among which the Philipsburg Jubilee
Library have developed a variety
of activities for children, youth, adults for Black History Month 2010.
Central theme: Struggle for dignity,
equality and non-discrimination in
Human Rights in Black History of the Caribbean
The UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay encouraged us last year to
celebrate Human Rights Day by advocating non-discrimination, organizing
activities,
raising awareness and reaching out to our local communities on December 10,
and throughout 2010 :
“Our main objective is to help promote
discrimination-free societies and a
world of equal treatment for all.” (…) The realization of all human rights -
social,
economic and cultural rights as well as civil and political rights –
is hampered by discrimination. All too often, when faced with prejudice
and discrimination, political leaders, governments and ordinary citizens
are silent or complacent. Yet every one of us can make a difference.”
