Exhibition Frank McCourt
At present a small exhibition about Frank McCourt is set up at the library. Frank McCourt born August 19, 1930 and died August 19, 1930. Frank McCourt died in New York City at the age of 78, he was a writer raised from the Ashes; as he describes so movingly in his memoir, Angela’s Ashes.  He told his story with humor, brilliant description, and deep compassion for his family who instilled in him a love of language and storytelling despite the horrors of McCourt’s childhood, such as nearly dying of typhoid fever, shiftless father and three of his siblings passing.

He quit school at the age of 13, went into a world of petty crime to feed his mother and three surviving brothers. He spent the war stationed in German and survived to pursue a college education on the G.I Bill. After graduating he went on to work for New York City Public School where he taught for the next 27 years. After years of teaching, McCourt determined to write his own life story. Angela’s Ashes which sold over 4 million copies, has been published in 27 countries and has been translated into 17 languages.

McCourt won the National Book Critics Circle Award, Los Angeles Times Book Award, the Abby Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. The Sequel Tis, shot to the top of the best-seller lists and so did Teacher man.

Rest in Peace, from the Philipsburg Jubilee Library.
