Exhibition Gangs and Violence 2009

Gangs are groups of young people who share a common identity.

A gang is an organization, but its activities are illegal. There affiliation is criminal.

Their gang activities include stealing, fighting and or selling drugs.

Gangs have rules such as:

“We will do what ever we can to keep what we have and get what we want.”

There are many reasons children choose to join gangs. Here are a few of them:

  • The desire to belong to a group
  • To escape from difficulties at home.
  • To feel more important and to get respect from others.
  • Protection from other gangs.

The search for a family, the belief that they must rob or kill to earn respect
and the need to belong is the driving force that leads gang members to a criminal life;

The above mentioned is true but some children fail to show respect to their parents,
peers, family members, and those in authority.

The lack of family togetherness and the negative influence of television and the
low level of their self –esteem leads them to a life of peril.
