Exhibition
‘ Under the care of the Lord” on display in the Library
The exhibition is
titled “Under the care of the Lord “ and paints a picture of Suriname in the
colonial period.
The main topics is the missionary work of the Moravian Church ( Evangelische
Broedergemeente) among
the slaves in Suriname. “ Under the care of the lord” was compiled by NINSEE,
the National institute
Slave History and heritage in Amsterdam and was previously on display in the
National Library of Aruba
and the NAAM museum in Curacao.
The main part of the
exhibition is formed by a number of letters written by slaves who escaped,
Maroons )
and some letters that were written by former slaves after 1863 when slavery had
been abolished. The exhibition
dismisses the wrongful assumption that the slaves could not read or write.
The official opening of
the exhibition will take place in the hall of the library on
Friday October 30th . between 6.00 and 8.00 pm. Well known historian
Mrs. Napolina Richardson will be the keynote speaker of the evening.
Anthropologist, Maria Reinders-Karg, from NINSEE Amsterdam, who is the compiler
of
the exhibition will be present to introduce the exhibition. Mrs. Astrigt
Hermelijn, will give a
presentation on behalf of the Moravian Church St Maarten.
The Library invited Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson to perform the official
opening act.
“ Under the care of the
Lord’ will be on the display in the Philipsburg Jubilee library during the
entire month of November.
