Summer Program 2008: Baly reads story for children @ library
As part of the Summer Reading Program 2008 at the Philipsburg Jubilee Library,
St. Maarten writer and poet Camille E. Baly read an exciting story from his own
work to the local children. "It all happened a very long time ago", he said to
his large audience, explaining that at that particular time there were many
slaves on St. Maarten. Baly is well-known in particular for the cultural aspect
of his work.
Librarian Maryland
Powell said that among the children who listened to Baly's story last Wednesday
were seven clients of Sr. Basilia Centre and their guardians, who had been
transported by bus. She said several other children had come to the library,
eager to participate in the reading program.
These reading sessions are being held every Tuesday for four- to six-year-olds
and every Wednesday for seven- to 12-year-old children. On both days, the
program runs from 10 to 11 am. Starting at 10 am on each Friday is the weekly
movie morning at the library. Powell said children get the opportunity to vote
for their own favorite movie. "The movie that has four or five hits will be
shown", the librarian explained.
